About

Squid My name is Amber, and if I had been born a boy I would’ve been a Nicholas. I kind of feel sad that I missed out on that opportunity, actually. Anyway, this is my personal website. I don’t know what possessed me to make it, considering that I am terribly and utterly boring. Nothing especially exciting happens during the hours when I am awake, nothing ever has, and while I like to entertain myself with outlandish sequences in my daily daydreams, I’m fairly positive that nothing will. Don’t count on that prediction though. I am merely an internet hobo, not a fortune teller.

I spend my days being a bratty, inconsiderate teenager and my nights assuming the alias of Sargeant Squiddy, the giant squid overlord with a plan to take over the world and defend all that is mine from the dreaded ground urchin, the mushroom. We don’t take kindly to fungi here, missus.

Because the shrooms may be watching our bases, I cannot divulge my weaknesses, but I can tell you that I have a very soft spot for sweet food. Actually, if you leave anything near me unattended that’s delicious and generally Bad For You™, don’t expect it to be there when you get back. My stomach will already be breaking it down and I’ll have hidden the remaining evidence by then. I am especially partial to chocolate cake, won tons filled with cream cheese, bagels, strawberry ice cream, fruit juice and brownies. Dr. Pepper is also very awesome.

Apart from stuffing myself, I also love to draw. I always have, since I was really little. Part of the fun is trying new techniques and working to make everything exactly right. See, I have a tendency to become obsessed with things that I can’t do until I can do them. The same is especially true for web design, which I have been doing since 2004. I’ve come a long way since then. I’m still not done, but man, will I ever be?

There are few things that I’m actually good at, so I just program my daydreams to make me good at whatever else I want to be skilled with. If my dreams ever came true, I’d be an accomplished pianist, violinist, guitarist, ice skater, hula hooper, break dancer, CG artist, author and I’d also be fluent in Spanish, Japanese, Italian and French. The list goes on. Notice how most of them are physical; about the only thing I’ve ever been good at is dodgeball in that respect. Now, hand-eye coordination, that’s a whole new thing altogether. I type pretty fast and I enjoy video games very much, although I admit my taste in video games is old… say, early 1990’s old. Sonic the Hedgehog and Pacman are absolute love, although I do have more recent games like Pokémon Diamond.

I’m also somewhat of a TV fan, and looking at my favorite shows I think it’s pretty obvious that I love comedy and Comedy Central: Scrubs, The Daily Show, The Colbert Report, South Park, Futurama, George Lopez, Spongebob Squarepants, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air… I don’t watch TV incredibly often, but when I do, those are the shows I’ll brake for. Movie wise, I prefer horror and comedy with some other random genre in the mix, namely The Blair Witch Project, Rose Red, Pirates of the Caribbean, The Ring, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street - actually, probably anything with Johnny Depp in it can be considered a favorite. He’s the only actor I’ve ever really given much of a crap about; he’s just so talented!

As for music and books… most of my favorites are Japanese in both areas. I know, I know, I sound like another anime obsessed kid pretending to be Asian or an otaku or something, but I really do enjoy Japanese products. I love the GazettE, Gackt, Kajiura Yuki, Yasushi Ishii and Malice Mizer, but I also enjoy English artists like Gogol Bordello, Guns N’ Roses, Marilyn Manson, Danny Elfman and Muse. So it’s a mixed bag - it’s just that I prefer the foreign sounds for some reason. I love that I don’t know what I’m hearing. It’s like eating Mrs. Lovett’s pies: I enjoy the product immensely, please do not spoil it for me and reveal the ghastly ingredients. Though often times I do look up lyrics for songs I love and enjoy the song even more afterward.

I said I like Japanese books too, by which I mostly mean manga. I love the expressive, adorable style and I love the edge it adds to stories. My all time favorites are Hellsing and Death Note. I’d name more, but it’s been awhile since I’ve really been into that kind of thing and I don’t enjoy others as much as I used to, but Hellsing and Death Note are timeless to me. Throw me on an island with one volume of each and a soccer ball for company and you have a happy squid.
